Well Child Visit Q&A

What should I expect during a well-child visit?

Well-child visits are scheduled at regular intervals so that your doctor at Cool Kidz Pediatrics can evaluate your child’s growth, weight, vision, and hearing. Developmental screenings are also routinely performed to be sure your child is meeting all their milestones.

During a well-child visit, your doctor performs a physical exam, screens for diet and nutritional concerns, and checks for signs of chronic diseases such as asthma and diabetes.

After assessing your child’s overall health, you’ll have time to talk with the doctor about any problems you may have. Whether you’re concerned because your child is a fussy eater, you’re having a hard time with toilet training, or they have separation anxiety or behavioral problems, your doctor at Cool Kidz Pediatrics is available to help.

When should I schedule well-child checkups?

Babies have their first in-office checkup within the first week after they’re born. Then they should have six more checkups over their first year, at 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months.

Well-child visits are scheduled at 15, 18, 24, and 30 months. Starting at age 3, your child should have yearly checkups until they turn 21.

What are developmental milestones?

Developmental milestones refer to a set of physical, social, language, emotional, and cognitive skills that most children can do within a specific age range. For example, most children start walking between 9-16 months. As your child grows, your doctor at Cool Kidz Pediatrics evaluates developmental milestones to determine if their skills are progressing at the appropriate pace.

What vaccinations will my child receive?

The team at Cool Kidz Pediatrics provides routine vaccines to ensure your child is protected from common contagious diseases. In addition to private vaccines, they offer free vaccinations for children who qualify for the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program.

Children receive vaccinations at nearly every well-child visit. This may seem like a lot of shots, but most vaccines are given in small doses that require several shots to build up to full immunization.

Your child receives immunizations to prevent them from catching more than 12 contagious diseases that often cause serious complications. A few examples of the most common diseases include:

  • Measles
  • Mumps
  • Chickenpox
  • Whooping cough
  • Polio
  • Tetanus
  • Diphtheria
  • Diarrheal disease
